Psalm 100 Worksheet

We come now to the Psalm commonly known as “the old 100th” That’s what its been called since William Kethe’s 1561 paraphrase set to the tune “The Old Hundredth” by Louis Bourgeois.

The Ancient Heading reads, “A Psalm of Thanksgiving,” so let’s go with that emphasis!

As I read this short Psalm, look for how the verbs form commands for us! There are at least 7.

The command to _________________________                                                                                     V. 1a

Missions is not the main purpose of the church, worship is! Missions exist because worship does not!                 -John Piper

The command to ‘______________________’ to the LORD                                                            V. 2a

The call to serve gladly in verse two does make us think of the privilege we have of ministering to others in all the way God calls us to do that – but the context here makes us think of the ministry we have to God as we praise and pray!

The command to ______________________                                                                                            V. 2b

Do you think of your faithful church attendance and your time of Adoration and Prayer as ministering to the LORD?

Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the Tetrarch, and Saul. AS THEY MINISTERED TO THE LORD AND FASTED, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away.                                                                                                     -Acts 13:1-3

The command to ____________________ truth about the LORD                                              V. 3

What a wonderful thought there in verse 3 – The Creator God who made us wants to be our Shepherd – He is not an indifferent “watchmaker” in the heavens; He is a loving and ________________________ Shepherd in our daily lives!

The command to ________________________ together                                                                  V. 4a

Verse 4 shows why this Psalm was one of the ones shouted and sung when _________________________ came to Jerusalem for the festivals. You can see them singing it as they entered the gates of the city and the various courtyards at the Temple. They were to come praising and thanking the LORD!

The commands to give ______________________ and bless His name                                 V. 4b

What are some of the attributes of God that we praise Him for?

What are some of the things God has done for us that we thank Him for?

The Psalmist himself gives 3 big reasons to praise and thank God in verse 5.

The word for goodness is the word Tob (H2896), which occurs 368 times in the Old Testament. It means, good, pleasant, agreeable.

The word for mercy is the word Hesed (H2617), which occurs 240 times in the Old Testament, It means God’s covenant love, His steadfast love, His lovingkindness, His mercy, even grace.

The Word for truth is Emuna (H530), which occurs 49 times in the Old Testament. It means truth, firmness, faithfulness, steadfastness, steadiness.

Tob and Hesed are the same words as in Psalm 23:6.

Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever!                      -Psalm 23:6

Hesed and Emuna are the same words as in Lamentations 3:22-23.

Through the LORD’S mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.                                                                                           -Lam. 3:22-23
