David’s Creator, David’s Descendant - Matthew 22:41-46
That song ties your brain in knots as you try to follow its flow. In today’s text we are going to see Jesus tie his questioners minds in knots by presenting to them the truth about Him they should have already known!
Matthew 22:41-46
Jesus has questions for His questioners - V. 41
We foolish humans often speak of questions we want to ask God, as though God has to explain or justify Himself to us. At judgment day the roles will be reversed and He will be the One asking the questions.
The question of fact: Whose descendant will the Christ be? - V. 42
The first time Israel was told their Messiah (Christ) would be a descendant of David was in 2 Samuel 7, what we now call the Davidic Covenant.
For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will do this. - Isaiah 9:6-7
The question of meaning: what is true about the Messiah - V. 43-45
When Jesus says David spoke “in the Spirit,” He is saying this is not just what David said, but what God said through David – Psalm 110 is Holy Scripture, and Holy Scripture comes from God the Holy Spirit.
Two different words are used for Lord in Psalm 110:1 – “YAHWEH said to My ADONAI.” And then YAHWEH goes on to speak of Adonai as Powerful King, Forever Priest, and Final Judge.
Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord (Adonai), at the presence of the God of Jacob. - Psalm 114:7
Three times in the year shall all your males appear before the Lord (Adonai) GOD (Yahweh). - Ex. 23:17
Do you understand what Jesus is teaching them?
They had come to believe that the Messiah would just be a human, not divine. Jesus makes clear that the Messiah would be BOTH human and divine, exactly as the Old Testament had prophesied and the New Testament was clarifying.
Who has ascended to Heaven and come down? Who has gathered the winds in His fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son’s name? Surely you know! - Proverbs 30:4
Before Abraham was, I AM. - John 8:58
Unless you believe that I AM, you will die in your sins. - John 8:24
“I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.” The Spirit and the Bride say “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.” - Revelation 22:16-17
