Psalm 106 Worksheet

NKJV heading is: Joy in Forgiveness of Israel’s Sins. We might add “despite her many failures.”

Psalm 106 is the ________________ Psalm in Book 4 of the Psalms (90-106) and also the longest Psalm in Book 4 (5th longest in the Psalms).

The Call to Praise                                                                                                                                             V. 1-2

Psalm 106 begins and ends with Praise the LORD!

Why does verse 1 say we are to we give thanks to the LORD?

For His mercy (Hesed) ___________________ forever!

Verse 1 is the same as 1 Chronicles 16:34, Psalm 107:1 and Psalm 136:1.

Prayer for God’s _______________________ as in days gone by                                                V. 3-12

After verse 6, the Psalmist speaks of the sins of them, their forefathers. But verse 6 makes clear that “we” of this generation _________________ with “them” as sinners in need of God’s forgiveness and restoration.

Thank God for the times the Bible says “___________________________!”

1 John 1:9

History of Israel’s ____________________                                                                                             V. 13-43

Verses 13-15 probably relate to Israel’s failures at Marah in Exodus 15.

Verse 16 to 18 describe their failures in Korah’s rebellion (Numbers 16).

Even though Aaron is called a saint in verse 16, verses 19-23 speak of the failure with the golden calf.

Eventually God grows weary with the ________________________ generation.

Is there anyone you are standing in the ________________ for, interceding for them to come to or back to God (verse 23)?

The failure of Israel’s spies is alluded to in verse 24.

Verses 28-31 show their failure to avoid idolatry and immorality described in Numbers 25.

In Genesis 15:6 we read that faith is accounted as righteousness for all who believe like Abraham. Here in Psalm 106:31 we read that God will also remember righteous ______________ when He rewards believers!

Verses 32-33 show their failure as they angered God at the waters of Meribah (strife) described in Numbers 20. Moses acted in frustration there, striking the rock in a way that showed rash anger – and his penalty was not being able to lead them into the Promised Land.

Verse 34 alludes to their failure to fully deal with the people of the land as described in Judges 1.

How bad did their idolatry get?

According to verses 36-39, they even practiced ______________________ sacrifice like the heathen.

The abortion industry would lose half its profits if churchgoing women didn’t have abortions, and if churchgoing men didn’t pressure their women into abortions.  The same could be said about the exploitive porn and gambling industries.

God will not be mocked – judgment will come to us just like them if we don’t repent.

Psalm 106 makes the case that a just God had to judge their sins and keep His word to have an unrepentant generation go into Babylonian captivity. Thank God there was still hope for those who repented. Thank God that He still says, “Nevertheless” based on His unconditional covenant ____________________.

Reminder of God’s covenant love and faithfulness                                                                    V. 44-48

In verse 8 God acted for His sake; in verse 45 He acted mercifully for their sake. Good thing, because as Lamentations 3:22 says, “Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not.” The word for mercies in verse 45 is ____________________ Hesed (God’s covenant love).

Verse 46 makes me think of Daniel and his friends in Babylon and Nehemiah and Esther in Persia!

Book 6 of the Psalms ends with the anticipation that Israel will return and rebuild the Holy Land. Thank God for His faithfulness overriding our own ______________________!

Note the ending of each book of the Psalms:

Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting! Amen and Amen!                                                             -Psalm 41:13 (David)

Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only does wondrous things! And blessed be His glorious name forever! And let the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and Amen. The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.                   -Psalm 72:19-20 (Solomon)

Blessed be the LORD forevermore! Amen and Amen.                       -Psalm 89:52 (Ethan the Ezrahite)

Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting! And let all the people say, “Amen!” Praise the LORD!                         -Psalm 106:48 (Anonymous)

Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD!                           -Psalm 150:6 (Anonymous)
