Jesus’ Baptism and Background                    Luke 3:21-38

A Baptist Pastor from Georgia named Michael

Every person matters to God, and every person matters to us.

The Genealogical background of Jesus                     V. 23-38

Matthew’s genealogy goes from Abraham _____________ to Joseph – that makes sense, because Matthew’s primary audience was his fellow Jews!

Luke’s genealogy probably goes from Mary’s dad all the way back to Adam.

And He has made from one blood every nation (ethnicity) of man to dwell on the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings.                   -Acts 17:26

In verse 31 we read that Mary, like Joseph is also descended from King David through ______________, another son of David and Bathsheba (I Chronicles 3:5).              Jeremiah 22:24-30

Another thing that’s pretty neat is how Mary’s line brings together the tribe of Judah in verse 33, which the Messiah must be from, with the tribe of __________, which the priests were from through Aaron.

His (Zacharias) wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.                          -Luke 1:5

Hebrews 4:14-16                    Christ the perfect High Priest!

To Messiah, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”   -Ps. 110:4 (See Hebrews 5-7)

Even Levi, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, so to speak, for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.   -Hebrews 7:9-10

So the One who alone would be Israel’s Prophet, Priest and King, had ________________ ties to the Prophet Moses, the Priest Aaron, and the King David!

The Baptism of Jesus                                                 V. 21-22

Luke’s account is the shortest in the synoptic gospels – The New King James Version records 117 words in Matthew’s gospel, 60 words in Mark’s gospel, and only __________ in Luke’s gospel. John’s gospel adds in other details that help.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man preferred before me, for He was before me.’ -John 1:29-30

For the why of baptism we need to go to Matthew’s gospel.

And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are you coming to me?” But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.                        -Matthew 3:14-15

Note Jesus said, “to fulfill” all righteousness, not merely to model. It is wonderful that Jesus is our example! But more than that, this shows His _________________________ with us!

He was numbered among the transgressors!            -Isaiah 53:12

“I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is accomplished.” -Jesus in Luke 12:50

All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.           -Isaiah 53:6

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.       -2 Cor. 5:21

There is sin IN you and me! There was sin ON Jesus but not IN Jesus!

2 Cor. 5:16-21, the context of that great verse 21.

And I will give him (the overcomer) a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it. -Jesus in Rev. 2:17

You matter to God, and you matter to us!
