Some things to remember as we study narrative passages:

The Bible does not ___________ pragmatism, when the “end justifies the means”

The Bible shows God’s providential _____________ unfolding both when people obey Him and disobey Him.

Narrative sections tell us what happened, without necessarily endorsing or providing a model to follow. Doctrinal passages tell us what to do and not do.

For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.   -Rom. 15:4

Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the end of the ages have come.   -I Cor. 10:11

Narrative sections do reinforce the __________________ of doing or not doing the commands and principles God gives

Now let’s look at how God’s providential plan continues to unfold:

First there was the _________________ made to Rebekah

And the Lord said to her: “Two nations are in your womb, two peoples shall be separated from your body; One people shall be stronger than the other, and the older shall serve the younger.”                      -Genesis 25:23

Then there was the action of Esau that had ________________ Rebekah

Genesis 26:34-35

Next there was Rebekah’s decision to help God out through deceiving Isaac.

As we have seen, her plan did work, but in addition to contributing to the delinquency of a Jacob, she lost the ____________________ to see what God would have done if she had gone to Him in prayer and faith.

The result was that Jacob did get the blessing.

Verses 27-29                       Verse 33b                 Romans 9:3-5

So think about the twists and turns the Abrahamic Covenant takes –

Not Abraham – Ishmael – Nebajoth, or Abraham – Isaac – Esau –                                  It is Abraham – Isaac – Jacob

The way Jacob got the blessing brought hard _____________________

Verses 41-45

God can bring His plan A out of our plan B choices – but never intentionally choose plan B in advance, and never try to justify plan B choices after the fact – God calls us to repent of sinful actions, not to justify them because good came about anyway.

Hebrews 12:16-17

“Danny, can I give my sinful children a physical blessing even though they aren’t receiving a spiritual blessing because of their actions?”
