God and the Arts
On Bach’s work there often was a three word Latin phrase: Soli Deo Gloria. That’s Latin for G________________ to God alone.
God’s creation reveals infinite creative expression; I will glorify Him through creative expression.
Two goals for this evening’s message:
1. I______________________ the creative among us to feel God’s pleasure when we create art that glorifies God!
2. E___________________ all of us to be ready to use all art as an introduction to the gospel!
The Bible teaches that all of our ___________________ have been given to us by God. Our responsibility is to develop them and use them for His glory.
‘Two-story house’ view of truth based on Kantian Dualism:
Values Private, Subjective Relative |
Postmodernism Religion, Morality |
Freedom Unknowable ideals |
Romanticism Protests the scientific worldview |
Continental Tradition of Art |
Facts Public Objective Universal |
Modernism Science, Industry |
Nature Knowable facts |
Enlightenment Portrays the scientific worldview |
Analytic Tradition of Art |
Art for the enlightenment/ analytic tradition has been to reflect science and math for the _________________________’s sake, whether it appeals to them or not!
Art for the romantic/ continental tradition has been art for art’s sake
Art has no concern whatever either with Duty or Truth. -Edgar Allen Poe
God is the Master Artist:
C________________________ is a work of art
The world is before our eyes like a beautiful book, in which all created things, great and small, are like letters, which give us the invisible things of God to behold. -Netherlands Reformed Confession
The B____________________ is a work of art
S________________________ is a work of art Ephesians 2:8-10

Some encouragement for the artist’s among us:
Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men. -Col. 3:23
“There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!” -Abraham Kuyper
The Bible is like a symphony with four movements: creation, curse, Christ’s redemption, and the eventual renewal of all things. All ______________ of that are fair game for Christian artists.
Some pointers for using the arts to lead people to Jesus:
Know the art that consciously or unconsciously _______________ on the true story
Know the art that ______________ a lie, and gently show its failed worldview
Know the art that _______________ Satan’s lies by beautifully pointing to the truth
It’s really neat to think that Christians will continue making art ____________________!
