Why Christians Support Israel
4 Reasons I would support Israel even if I wasn’t a Christian:
First, after the horrors of the holocaust and Adolph Hitler’s genocide of 6 million plus Jews, the civilized world agreed that Jews should finally have their own home country to live in after centuries of persecution.
Second, it makes the most sense for that homeland to be right where Israel is. They have a historical claim on that land going back to 1405 B.C.
Third, Israel has become one of the world’s best democracies. It is the best place in the Middle East to be anything but a follower of Sharia Law.
Fourth, Israeli citizens and other Jews have made momentous contributions to the world.
“The problem is that one side has supported a two-state solution – I’m talking about Israel. The other side never did and still doesn’t. One side uses terrorism to achieve its goals – the other side retaliates against terrorism. One side is accused of genocide but doesn’t do it; the other side would actually love to do it. People keep saying Israel has the right to defend itself, but when Israel does, they object to it.” - Bill Mahar
Biblical reasons to support Israel:
First, our Christian faith is rooted in God’s dealings with Israel.
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” - Genesis 12:1-3
And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God. - Genesis 17:8
Being the nation to bring the Law and the Messiah into the world is not just the greatest blessing for the nation that was chosen, but also the greatest burden any nation has ever had to bear.
And now the LORD says. Who formed Me from the womb to be His servant, to bring Jacob back to Him (For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and My God shall be My strength). Indeed He says, “It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, that You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.” - Isaiah 49:5-6
But some of the branches were broken off, and you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree. Do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are remember IT IS NOT YOU WHO SUPPORT THE ROOT, BUT THE ROOT THAT SUPPORTS YOU. - Romans 11:17-18
As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers, For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. - Romans 11:28-29
Second, there are prophecies related to Israel being fulfilled, and that are yet to be fulfilled.
Then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, and I will remember my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land. But the land shall be abandoned by them and enjoy its Sabbaths while it lays desolate without them, and they shall make amends for their iniquity, because they spurned my rules and their soul abhorred my statutes. YET FOR ALL THAT, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not spurn them, neither will I abhor them so as to utterly destroy them utterly and break my covenant with them, for I am the Lord their God. But I will for their sake remember the covenant with their forefathers, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God: I AM the LORD. - Lev. 26:42-45
So when they had come together, they asked Him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the Kingdom of Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” - Jesus in Acts 1:6-8
Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles has come in. And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, “The Deliverer will come from Zion, He will banish ungodliness from Jacob,” “and this will be My covenant with them when I take away their sins.” - Romans 11:25-26
Third, it really is a timeless principle that God will bless those who bless Israel, and curse those who curse Israel.
“He who touches you (Israel) touches the apple of His eyes.” - Zech. 2:8
For the Day of the LORD is near upon all the nations. As you have done, it shall be done to you; your own deeds shall return on your head.” - Obadiah 15
“I shall always remember your husband’s helpfulness to me in behalf of a noble cause. In 1950 Dr. Barber arranged for Dr. J. Frank Norris, internationally known Baptist leader of Fort Worth, Texas, to come to Danville and deliver an inspiring sermon at the Baptist Tabernacle before a congregation of over 1200 people about Palestine in light of prophecy. Dr. Barber, on many occasions, demonstrated a profound understanding and sympathy for the reestablishment of the Hebraic civilization and culture on the ancestral soil of Palestine.” -Dr. Samuel Newman to Mrs. R.J. Barber, Sr. on Nov. 15, 1961
Thus says the LORD, who gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar – the Lord of Hosts is His name: if this fixed order departs from before Me, declares the LORD, than shall the offspring of Israel cease from being a nation before Me forever. Thus says the LORD: “If the heavens above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth below can be explored, then I will cast off all the offspring of Israel for all that they have done, declares the LORD.” - Jeremiah 31:35-37
